Heart of Midlothian

They participate in the Scottish Premiership, which is the highest level of football competition in Scotland. The club, established in 1874, takes pride in being the oldest and most successful team in the capital. Its name draws inspiration from Walter Scott's book, The Heart of Midlothian. The team's emblem is based on the Heart of Midlothian mosaic found on the Royal Mile, while their official colors are maroon and white. Hearts have called Tynecastle Park their home ground since 1886. The stadium was transformed into an all-seater venue in 1990 and now has a seating capacity of 19,852, which was further enhanced with the rebuilding of the main stand in 2017. Their training facilities are located at Oriam, Scotland's national sports performance center, where they manage their youth academy as well. Hearts have clinched the Scottish league championship four times, with their most recent triumph in the 1959–60 season, where they also secured the Scottish League Cup to achieve a League and League Cup double – a rare accomplishment only shared with the Old Firm clubs. A golden era for the club was when former player turned manager Tommy Walker led them through a successful period from the early 1950s to the mid-1960s. During this time frame, they claimed two league titles, one Scottish Cup, and four Scottish League Cups, impressively maintaining a spot in the top four positions of the league for 11 consecutive seasons. The team's attacking prowess was highlighted by notable players like Jimmy Wardhaugh, Willie Bauld, and Alfie Conn Sr., known as the 'Terrible Trio', alongside key figures Dave Mackay and John Cumming. In their victorious 1957–58 league season, another attacking trio of Wardhaugh, Jimmy Murray, and Alex Young set a record for the highest number of goals scored in a single Scottish top-flight winning campaign. Furthermore, Hearts have triumphed in the Scottish Cup on eight occasions, with their most recent victory in 2012 against local rivals Hibernian with a 5–1 scoreline. They have also endured defeat in the finals of the Scottish Cup in 2019, 2020, and 2022. Under Walker's management, the team clinched all four of their Scottish League Cup titles, with their latest win being a 1–0 result over Kilmarnock in 1962. Their last League Cup Final appearance happened in 2013 when they narrowly lost 3–2 to St Mirren. In 1958, Hearts became the third Scottish and fifth British club to compete in European competition, reaching the quarter-finals of the 1988–89 UEFA Cup before bowing out to Bayern Munich with a 2–1 aggregate score.
